FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball rallied late in the game to earn its seventh win of the year. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat CSU Bakersfield 3-2 on Wednesday night at Bulldog Diamond.
Second baseman Brooke Ortiz drove in the game-winning run with a single to right field. Ortiz' base knock gave the `Dogs the win as they improved to an overall mark of 7-6.
"Seeing Brenna hit the triple really pumped us up," said Ortiz. "I approached it like an everyday at-bat and didn't think too much about it."
The rally began in the seventh inning with outfielder Diane Runge getting on base with a single. Sophomore Brenna Moss followed with a triple, her fourth of the season, allowing Runge to score and tying the game. Moss crossed home and scored the game-winning run with a base hit from Ortiz.
"A win is always good. I wish we had been a bit more aggressive on offense earlier in the game," said head coach Trisha Ford. "We are very young and we are still trying to learn how to approach each at-bat. We have to keep learning from each at-bat and pitch to get better at-bats."
Runge and Ortiz led the team with two hits each on the night. Runge finished 2-for-3, while Ortiz ended the night 2-for-4. The Bulldogs totaled eight hits against the Roadrunners.
Hannah Harris got the starting nod in the circle on Wednesday night. The freshman threw four innings and allowed only one run. She recorded three strikeouts and no walks.
Fresno State came close to taking a lead in the third inning. Michelle Solomon was robbed of a two-run double. The Roadrunners right fielder Amber Mills laid out making a diving catch in right center field, which saved two Bulldog runs from crossing home plate.
CSU Bakersfield was the first to get on the board after scoring on a double down the left field line. Heading into the bottom half of the third inning, the Bulldogs trailed the Runners 1-0.
Taylor Langdon took over in the circle in the fifth inning in her fifth appearance of the year. Langdon struck out one batter en route to her second career win. She is now 2-1 in the circle and has a 1.24 ERA in 17 innings pitched in 2013.
In the sixth inning, CSU Bakersfield added an insurance run with a RBI single to left field as their lead grew 2-0 over the Bulldogs. Fresno State got on the board in the next half inning cutting the Runners lead to one. Vonnie Martin hit an RBI single up the middle and the `Dogs trailed 2-1.
Freshman Paige Gumz saved another run from being plated by the Roadrunners. The Bulldog catcher tagged the CSUB runner out at home.
The Bulldogs' two runs scored in the seventh inning gave the `Dogs their fourth win over the Roadrunners in program history. Fresno State owns a 4-0 all-time record over CSU Bakersfield. Fresno State travels to the Bay Area Feb. 22-24 for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
