    `Dogs Split Day One in Santa Clara

    Fresno State softball went 1-1 on the first day of the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresno State softball lost its first game on Friday 5-2 to San Jose State, but rebounded in the second game to defeat Santa Clara 5-1. The Bulldogs are 1-1 after the first day of the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. The 'Dogs are now 8-7 in 2013.

    Fresno State tallied eight hits in the second game of day against the Broncos and was led by Brenna Moss, who finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI. The sophomore leads the team with five triples and is hitting a team-high .352.

    Stesha Brazil also had a multi-hit game, her sixth of the season. One of Brazil's two hits was a two-run home run, which was hit well into the parking lot beyond the left field fence. She leads the team with five homers.

    The Bulldogs scored quickly against Santa Clara in the first inning. Moss got on base with a single and moved around the bases with a sacrifice hit, a stolen base and throwing error brought her home.

    Freshman Taylor Langdon in her first career start retired the Bronco batters in order in the bottom of the first. She struck out two in four innings of work and allowed only one earned run. Langdon is now 3-1 on the year and has a ERA of 1.33.

    The Broncos threatened to tie the game in the second inning with a runner in scoring position. Langdon and the `Dogs defense made it out of the inning without allowing a run to score and headed to the third inning with a one run lead.

    Senior Diane Runge led off the third inning with a double off the third base bag. Moss followed with a triple to right center bringing home Runge as the `Dogs led Santa Clara 2-0.

     

     

    Santa Clara got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. An RBI double from the Broncos cut Fresno State's lead to 2-1. The Broncos sent two runners home in the bottom of the fourth innings and each time freshman catcher Paige Gumz tagged them out as the `Dogs held on to a 2-1 lead over the Broncos.

    Hannah Harris took over in the circle and threw three shutout innings in relief. She earned her first career save against the Broncos.

    Brazil hit a two-run home run leftfield fence and heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning the Bulldogs lead 4-1. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to beat SCU 5-1.

    The Bulldogs also scored first against San Jose State in the earlier game. Vonnie Martin hit two-run double to right center in the first inning. The Bulldogs led 2-0 after the first inning.

    San Jose State took a 3-2 lead in the second inning with a three-run home run to right field. The Spartans sealed the 5-2 win over the `Dogs after adding two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

    The `Dogs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 against Cal State Northridge at Santa Clara Softball stadium.
