Feb. 22, 2006
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23 Fresno State softball team picked up an 8-0, 5 inning victory over UC Davis behind a barrage of extra base hits, including a two-run home run from junior catcher Nichole Willis.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Robin Mackin, who was named the Xbox Live Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, threw a two-hitter for her second shutout win of the season.
Mackin also walked three and struck out nine as she improved to 5-3 on the season.
At the plate, the Bulldogs recorded eight runs on seven hits to go along with seven RBI. Fresno State also collected three doubles while Willis hit her first home run of the season.
UC Davis utilized two pitchers as starter Rachel Kelly took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits while walking four in 2.1 innings of work. Lindsay Tognetti pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up three runs on three hits while walking one.
Fresno State scored four runs in the second and added a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings.
In the second with one out, freshman right fielder Mallory Perkins doubled down the left field line as Mackin and freshman left fielder Ashley White both walked to start the inning off. With Perkins on third with two outs, senior All-America shortstop Christina Clark drilled a double to right center to score Perkins. Freshman designated Merryann Barr then singled to center field to knock in Clark as the Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits.
In the third with one out, Mackin singled to left field. With Tognetti coming into the circle, White popped out before junior centerfielder Shannon Garvin roped a double to left center to score Mackin. After freshman third baseman Haley Perkins reached on an Aggie error and Garvin going to third on the play, Perkins induced the Aggie infielders into a rundown. Perkins successfully reached second and Garvin ran home after an errant throw by the UC Davis second baseman in the run down.
In the fourth, Clark led the inning off with a walk. After stealing second, Willis homered to left field to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead and eventual win.
