CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Powered by a three-run seventh and outstanding pitching, the 23rd-ranked Fresno State softball team toppled 10th-ranked Oklahoma 4-2, Friday at the Palm Springs Classic. In its second game of the day, Fresno State rallied from a 1-0 deficit to give the Sooners their second loss of the year. Fresno State won its fourth straight, improving to 8-5, while Oklahoma fell to 10-2-1 on the season.
Freshman Robin Mackin was stellar again, notching her seventh victory by allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, while walking four and striking out 11. Oklahoma's Morgan Hudsonpillar was given her first loss of the year, falling to 3-1.
The Sooners scored first in the bottom half of the opening inning when Jamie Fox drove in Norrelle Dickson. But Mackin held Oklahoma hitless for the next five innings. Then Oklahoma scored once more in the bottom of the seventh.
Fresno State trailed 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Senior Christina Clark was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on freshman Merryann Barr's single to left. One out later, Mackin lifted a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Clark and knotting the game at one.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs captured the lead when freshman Haley Perkins singled to center to drive home senior Katrina Jacques who had been pinch running for sophomore Ashley White. Clark later scored on a bases loaded walk issued to Barr just before sophomore Kristin Sylvester laced a single to left to plate Perkins.
Sylvester was 3-for-4 on the day, while Perkins and junior Shannon Garvin also had multi-hit games. The Bulldogs return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they face Texas, followed by an 8 p.m. matchup with Texas Tech.
