CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns beat No. 23 Fresno State 7-2, Saturday at the Palm Springs Classic. It was Fresno State's first loss of the tournament. The Bulldogs fell to 8-6, while Texas improved to 15-1.
Cat Osterman was awarded the win, working three and a third innings, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out six. Texas starter Meagan Denny lasted three and two thirds innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Katie Nelson (1-1) got the loss in two innings of work. She allowed three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one.
Texas took and early 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a Jacqueline Williams two-out three-run home run to center.
In the bottom of the third, Fresno State got on the board when Haley Perkins' two-out single drove in Nichole Willis from second. Willis singled to open the frame then advanced to second on Ashley White's sacrifice bunt.
The Bulldogs tallied another run in the fourth. Christina Clark walked before Merryann Barr reached on an error. One out later, with the bases loaded, Willis flied to center, scoring Clark from third and cutting Texas' lead to 3-2.
But Texas scored two more in the top of the sixth. Kelly Melone drew a one-out walk just before Chez Sievers hit a two-run homer to left.
Freshman Robin Mackin entered the pitching circle in the third and threw five innings of relief. She allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out four.
Fresno State continues play in the Palm Springs Classic Saturday evening at 8 p.m. when it faces the Red Raiders of Texas Tech.
