CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 23 Fresno State Bulldogs defeated Texas Tech 3-0, Saturday at the Palm Springs Softball Classic. The Bulldogs scored early and held on for the win behind freshman Robin Mackin's solid performance in the pitcher's circle. The Bulldogs improved to 9-6 while Texas Tech fell to 5-12.
Mackin was nearly untouchable while winning her fourth consecutive start. She held the Red Raiders scoreless on two hits in seven innings, walking four and striking out 13. She improved to 8-3 on the season, while Texas Tech starter Erin Crawford fell to 3-2.
Freshman Haley Perkins led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. Sophomore Jenna Cervantez followed by popping up a bunt attempt. But Texas Tech failed to make the catch as the ball fell in fair territory. Texas Texas Tech catcher Robyn Wike fielded the ball and attempted to throw out Perkins at second, but the ball sailed into centerfield allowing both Perkins and Cervantez to score.
The Bulldogs scored once more in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Merryann Barr singled with one out then advanced to second on sophomore Kristen Sylvester's single. Both Barr and Sylvester advanced on a wild pitch just before junior Nichole Willis drove in Barr with a fielder's choice. Willis was 2-for-3 with an RBI on the evening.
Fresno State improved to 3-1 in the Palm Springs Classic. The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. when they face Cal Poly in their last game of the tournament.
