SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked Fresno State softball team fell in a heartbreaker, 2-1 to Loyola Marymount, Friday at the Aztec Classic in San Diego. Freshman pitcher Robin Mackin pitched six innings of no-hit ball before LMU's Hillaree Bennett hit a homer to left, sealing the victory for the Lions. LMU's Samantha Lavino was awarded the win, while Mackin got the loss. Fresno State fell to 9-8 on the year, while the Lions improved to 8-6.
The Bulldogs scored in the first when freshman Merryann Barr singled to center, scoring senior Christina Clark from second. LMU, however, answered in the bottom of half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tracy Cook. Cook got aboard by drawing a walk. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Beginning in the second, Mackin struck out six consecutive and eight of 10 batters. Mackin allowed two runs on one-hit in six innings, walking two while striking out 10. Mackin was also 2-for-3 at the plate.
Fresno State continues play in the Aztec classic later today, Friday, Mar. 3, at 4:30 p.m. when it faces Cal State Northridge.
