SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team ended the San Diego Classic I with a 8-1 win over co-host San Diego. The Bulldogs (13-10, 0-0 MW) lost their first game of the day 8-0 to Long Beach State. The `Dogs had a tournament record of 3-2 on the weekend.
Four Bulldogs recorded a multi-hit game against the Toreros. Diane Runge, Stesha Brazil, Kapri Angotti and Whitney Smith tallied two hits in the second game of the day. Brazil and Smith also recorded two RBI.
"Our urgency to score more runs and get on base was higher in the second game," said Angotti. "Our approach at the plate was better and more productive. We focused on base hits and took everything one pitch at a time. A lot of it was realizing that we are capable of more than what we showed in the first game."
Angotti got her first career start as the `Dogs designated player and career hits in front of a home town crowd. The junior grew up in San Diego before moving to Clovis, Calif..
"It was an awesome feeling and to cool to be able to play in front of family that I don't get to see as often," Angotti said. "It gave me more confidence and knowing what I am capable of. I realized how much even a base hit can energize the team and give us momentum to keep pushing for more runs."
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against San Diego. Brazil drove in the run with a single up the middle. Fresno State executed a double steal in the third inning, which caused an error allowing Brenna Moss to score another run.
The Bulldogs extended their lead 4-0 with two more runs in the fourth inning. Vonnie Martin and Angotti led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Smith doubled up the middle to bringing home two Bulldog runs.
San Diego got one run across in the bottom of the fifth inning cutting the Bulldogs lead to 4-1. In the next half inning, the `Dogs scored four runs on five hits increasing their lead to 8-1.
Runge drove in the first run of the fifth inning rally with a single. Moss crossed home plate on an error as the Bulldogs led 6-1. Brazil extended the lead with doubled to right center driving in a run the third run of the rally. Michelle Solomon drove in the final run with a double giving the Bulldogs an 8-1 lead.
Langdon got her fourth start in the circle and allowed only one run to score. She logged four scoreless innings and gave up six hits in her 11th appearance. Langdon gave up a hit to start off the game, but then retired eight batters in order from the first to third inning. The Freshman is 5-1 on the mound and has a 1.73 ERA.
