SAN DIEGO - The No. 25 Fresno State softball team beat Loyola Marymount 6-1 Sunday in their final game at the Aztec Classic in San Diego. The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 after the first half inning but quickly regained the lead and never faltered. Freshman Robin Mackin again delivered a solid performance in the circle helping the Bulldogs improve to 11-9. LMU fell to 8-9 with the loss.
LMU scored first in the opening inning when Tracy Cook's single fell into short right field, scoring Kristen Slouber from second. Slouber had walked to lead off the game then stole second with two outs.
The Bulldogs came right back in the bottom half of the frame to score two runs. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out when sophomore Kristin Sylvester singled to right, scoring senior Christina Clark from third. Then, during the same play, freshman Haley Perkins scored after a throwing error from LMU's Kristen Whitt.
Fresno State increased its lead in the bottom of the fourth when junior Nichole Willis drew a walk to bring in a run.
The Bulldogs then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomores Lindsay Milchovich and Jenna Cervantez walked to begin the inning. Junior Shannon Garvin moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt followed by a Clark RBI single to left. Perkins then singled to center to drive in a run and one out later Sylvester singled to center as well, plating Clark.
Mackin went the distance, allowing one run on three hits, walking one while striking out nine.
Fresno State begins its longest homestand of the season this week with 10 straight games at Bulldog Diamond. Up first is a non-conference doubleheader againt St. Francis on Wed., March 8, 6:00 p.m. Fresno State then hosts its four-day seven-team tournament field in its own Bulldog Classic presented by Bingham Toyota, Thu.-Sun., March 9-12.
