Bulldogs Pick up 20th Win of the Season

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Bulldogs tied the best start since 1999 by picking up their 20th win on the season against Cal Poly Friday night 1-0, on day two of the Bingham Toyota Classic at Bulldog Diamond. The No. 21/23 Bulldogs defeated Sacramento State 4-2 earlier in the evening and are 20-3 on the year.
With two outs, Aja Scheuber hit a double to center field to score Gilleland from third. The Bulldogs would take the 2-0 lead after one.
Perkins was hit by a pitch in the top of the third and Gilleland reached first on a sacrifice and an error. Caitlin Stiglich hit a sacrifice bunt to move Perkins and Gilleland to second and third with one out. Jenna Cervantez squeezed a bunt to get Perkins home, but Perkins was out at the plate.
A double steal by Cervantez and Gilleland scored Gilleland. Cervantez would reach third on a wild pitch then score off an error and the Bulldogs would take the 4-0 lead after three.
Sacramento State would get its first run of the game in the top of the fourth as the play started with a double by the Hornet catcher Jamie Schloredt. Jenice Bartee would pinch run for her and eventually score off an error.
The Hornets would score again in the top of the next inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
Ashley Cox would enter the game to replace Bulldog starter Nicole Angene on the mound in the fifth with two outs. Angene went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three. She improved to 4-2 on the season with the win.
Cox went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and earned her first save of the season.
Cervantez led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to center field. Scheuber would follow with a single to center and reach second on the throw.
With two outs, senior Samantha Legorreta made her first at bat of the season as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth.
Perkins snapped her 11-game hitting streak which including five triples in the last six games, but she would score one run along with Cervantez and Gilleland scored two. Scheuber led the team with three hits.
Brittany Clifford recorded the loss for the Hornets as she is now 3-2 and Sacramento State is 7-9.
The Bulldogs improve to 26-9 all-time vs. Sacramento State.
Ashley White would reach first on a fielder's choice and Scheuber would advance to second with only one out, but the Bulldogs would leave two runners on base, the best attempt of the night at that point for either team.
Jessica Rogers would get the first hit of the ball game in the top of the third inning and the Bulldogs first hit would come in the bottom of the fifth, an infield single by Lisamarie Coronado.
Angene would follow Coronado with a single to left field, but the Bulldogs would leave two on base in a 0-0 game in the fifth.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Cervantez was hit by a pitch then reached second on a single to left center by Stiglich.
Scheuber would hit a single to left field to score Cervantez from third and the Bulldogs scored the first and only run of the game to take a 1-0 lead and earn the victory.
Melloh improves to an impressive 13-1. It was her 13th complete game of the season, her eighth game with 10 or more strikeouts and her ninth shutout.
Fresno State is now 9-0 at Bulldog Diamond.
To open day two of the Bingham Toyota Classic, Sacramento State defeated Rhode Island 13-1 in five innings in the morning game, followed by Houston defeated Santa Clara 4-0 and Rhode Island 8-1. DePaul, also defeated Santa Clara 6-0.

Sunday March 9th is National Championship Softball Day as the 1998 Fresno State softball team will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony. Deputy Mayor Jeff Eben will read the proclamation at that time and 11 members from the University's only National Championship will be on hand.
