FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team made its largest come back of the season to defeat Iowa State 7-6 on Thursday night to kick off the Fresno State Classic. The Bulldogs overcame a 5-0 deficit en route to their 14th win of the season.
"This is another example of the character building we've been seeing from the team the last couple of weeks," said head coach Trisha Ford. "They are fighting and that is what good teams are made of. They don't quit until the last out and it was a good team effort tonight."
Ford called upon Kelly Megee in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and the game tied. The sophomore hit a single to the outfield allowing the game-winning run to cross home plate.
"It was nice to come out here and be able to get the win for my team," said Megee of her walk-off single. "This win shows we have a lot of heart and fight in us. We didn't want to go down losing 5-0. It shows how strong we are."
The Bulldogs (14-10, 0-0 MW) got in two innings before the rain rolled into Bulldog Diamond. Iowa State had two runners on base and two outs before the game was halted for an hour and 13 minutes because of rain.
Once the game resumed, the Cyclones plated five runs to take the lead, 5-0. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally scoring three runs on four hits. Stesha Brazil drove in the first Bulldog run with an RBI single and Michelle Solomon drove in another run with a double to left center. Paige Gumz brought Solomon home with a double to right center cutting the Cyclones lead 5-3.
"The third inning was a statement inning," Ford said. "They hit the ball well and said we aren't going down without a fight."
Iowa State added to its lead with a solo home run to right field. The Cyclones led Fresno State 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Solomon drove in her second run of the night in the fifth as the `Dogs trailed 6-4. The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth inning after Brenna Moss hit a sacrifice fly and the `Dogs trailed by one.
Designated player Kapri Angotti hit a bunt single to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith earned a walk with the bases loaded, which allowed the tying run to score and brought Megee to the plate.
"I told the team to take it one pitch at a time and just fight," Ford said. "That's us in a nutshell. They took it one pitch at a time and kept fighting until the last out."
The Bulldogs outhit Iowa State 12-9 in the first game of five over the next four days. Solomon finished the night with a team best three hits and two RBI. Also collecting a multi-hit game against the Cyclones was Angotti and Maria Sio.
Jill Compton struck out four in her 12th start of the year. Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Taylor Langdon took over the circle in the sixth inning. She threw two scoreless innings and is now 6-1 in 2013.
"This win is a great momentum builder for us and a great feeling for the team," Ford added.
