FULLERTON, Calif. - In a battle between two of the winningest programs in NCAA history, the Fresno State softball team (10-7) was topped by Cal State Fullerton (15-7) Friday night by a 9-2 score in its second game of the Judi Garman Classic.
The Titans took advantage of five unearned runs in the opening two innings to end a five-game Bulldog series winning streak between 2006-12, while the `Dogs still hold a 41-32 all-time edge.
Offensively for Fresno State, freshman pinch-hitter Kierra Willis drilled her first collegiate triple to right field in the sixth inning to account for both of Fresno State's runs. That hit in her lone at-bat of the day also upped her reached base streak to a team-season best 11 games.
The `Dogs also put two runners on base in the first inning on walks to Martin and senior first baseman Stesha Brazil, while Brazil also reached via a fourth-inning single.
With her two walks and single Friday, Martin has reached base six consecutive times and upped her team-leading season totals for hitting (.357) and walks (18), while her 15 hits is one shy of Brenna Moss's team best this year (16).
In the fifth inning, freshman second baseman Liza Liddell laced her first hit as a collegian - a single to right field - and senior left fielder Kapri Angotti also reached via an error by the pitcher on a grounder. However, the next two batters were retired on a fielder's choice ground-out and fly-out to end the scoring threat.
The Titans scored once in the first inning after a walk, errant throw by the first baseman to second base on a fielder's choice grounder, and RBI single.
CSF added four runs in the second inning on a pair of one-out singles that were immediately followed by an outfielder throwing error and dropped fly ball, walk and double.
The Titans' final runs came on a solo homer to right field by Ariel Tsuchiyama in the fourth inning, and a two-run shot by Gabby Aragon to left field in the sixth.
In her 10th start of the season, Bulldog sophomore Jill Compton (6-4) logged her sixth complete game of the year. The All-MW returnee struck out two, walked five, gave up seven hits, and four of her nine runs allowed were earned.
Titan starter Jasmine Antunez (7-4) also pitched a complete game, struck out three, walked three, yielded four hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
CSF's Gabby Aragon (3-for-4) ended with 5 RBI, and four other Titans logged single hits.
Looking ahead, the `Dogs return to Anderson Family Field to play NCAA Tournament returnee Houston (11-9) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and Women's College World Series returnees No. 14 Nebraska and No. 6 Washington on Sunday at 9 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
On Friday night, the Cougars topped No. 4 Michigan by a 5-2 count after it fell to Texas (5-1) and Long Beach State (7-5) on Thursday.
