FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State opened tournament play victoriously in its own Bulldog Classic presented by Bingham Toyota with a 4-2 win over No. 22 DePaul.
Freshman right hander Robin Mackin tossed a two-hitter, walked three and struck out 11 to improve to 12-5 overall.
The rookie had a shutout going until the sixth when the Bulldogs defense got shaky and allowed two unearned runs.
Freshman designated player Merryann Barr had a multiple hit game after going 2-3 with a run. Freshman third baseman Haley Perkins, sophomore first baseman Kristin Sylvester, junior catcher Nichole Willis and Mackin each collected a RBI.
Fresno State scored three runs in the third and added one more in the fourth.
In the third with runners on first and second and one out, Barr singled to left field to load the bases. Sylvester then drove a pitch through the right side to score junior centerfielder Shannon Garvin, who had reached via a DePaul error. Willis followed with a full count walk and plated Clark, who had reached earlier on a walk. Mackin then lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Barr.
In the fourth senior shortstop Christina Clark hit a two-out triple to right field. She would immediately score on Perkin's RBI single to the opposite field.
DePaul captured its two runs in the sixth. After the leadoff batter Sandy Vojik reached on a dropped ball by the Bulldog right fielder Daisy Gaynor, Amber Patton beat out an infield single for the Blue Demon's second hit of the game. Linda Secka then reached safely on an error by Clark, which allowed Vojik to score. With runners on second and third, Mackin got the first out after getting Kate Sheaks to pop out to center field. Mackin then struck out Stephanie Blagaich for out No. 2. DePaul's second run would score on a fielder's choice by Jessica Evans as Patton scored.
DePaul starter Megan Huitink took the loss and dropped to 3-2 overall after allowinig two four runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.
The Bulldog Classic continues tomorrow with six games on tap. Fresno State will play two tomorrow with a 5:00 p.m. contest against Ball State followed by a 7:00 p.m. game versus Central Florida.
