FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team concluded the Fresno State Classic with an 8-0 run-rule victory over St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon in Bulldog Diamond. Freshman Hannah Harris threw her first complete game shutout as the Bulldogs (15-11, 0-0 MW) outhit the Gaels 11-3.
"It felt good to come out and get a win like this after last night," said sophomore Michelle Solomon of the `Dogs run-rule victory. "We were able to put runs on the board that we should've put on last night. We saw our potential this weekend and we can compete with anyone when we play our game."
The `Dogs had another stellar outing in the circle less than 24 hours after Jill Compton threw a one-hitter against No. 6 Cal. Harris dealt six scoreless innings and surrendered only three hits to SMC. The Fresno State pitching staff has allowed one run in 12 of the last 13 innings.
"This weekend really showed everything that we've been working on and that it's starting to come together," Harris said.
Harris improves to 3-2 in the circle and has an ERA of 2,91. She faced 20 batters, which is two over the minimum.
The Bulldogs opened the final game of the Fresno State Classic with four runs on three hits. Brenna Moss led off with a triple for the Bulldogs. She ran home as the St. Mary's third baseman walked the ball back to the circle. Vonnie Martin drove in one with a single to shallow center field. Left fielder Kapri Angotti followed with a two RBI single to the same spot as Martin increasing the `Dogs lead 4-0 over the Gaels.
"They came out full of energy, executed things well and really took their game to the next level," said head coach Trisha Ford. "It's important for us to continue with what we've been building the last couple of weeks. The team is starting to put everything together and has put in a lot of work. They are starting to feel good and work well together."
In the second inning, St Mary's recorded its first hit of the game and the Bulldogs cleared the bases with a double play.
Solomon added to the Bulldogs lead in the third inning with a solo shot to left center field. The sophomore has two home runs on the season and is hitting .500 in the past three games.
Fresno State added a run in the fifth inning on three hits. Angotti drove in another run with a single to shallow left field. She drove in a career-high three RBI against the Gaels and is now hitting .381 on the year. She finished the game 3-for-3.
