1500! Bulldog Softball Hits Milestone
March 10, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. --- The beauty of Michelle Moses' two-hit shutout and season high 14 strikeout masterpiece combined with a clutch two-out RBI by Andrea Ortega to key the Bulldog softball team's 1-0 win over Idaho State for Fresno State's 1,500th all-time victory.
"1500 says a lot about the program and all the great athletes that have been through it," 26th-year head coach Margie Wright said. "Any athlete that has worn a Fresno State jersey should be very proud."
Moses delivered an absolute gem in the circle and tossed a season-best 14 strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the season.
"We had good workouts all week and we were just ready to come out and play," Moses noted. "We came out here and I just went with what was working."
After five and a half innings of a scoreless pitcher's duel between Moses and Idaho State's Christina Rayner, Bulldog freshman Brooke Ortiz smashed a leadoff single in the sixth and came around to score when Ortega poked a ground ball to the right side of the infield to plate Ortiz from third.
"All I wanted to do was put the ball in play," Ortega said of her game-winner. "We just had to get something going. It was a good ball and I took it to the right side."
Moses went the distance for the complete game shutout - her first shutout of the season and fifth complete game in ten starts through the first 13 games.
"It was a battle today," Wright added. "We got a late start and I was very pleased how the team performed. Michelle did a great job with her pitches today and pitched very well. Her strikeouts were awesome, but the double play and great defense were big for us and everyone did a great job. That's major league play out there."
The Bulldogs (9-4) will play twice on Friday when they face Bradley at 4:30 p.m. and Idaho State at 7 p.m. during the second day of the 2011 Bayer CropScience Classic.
