FRESNO, Calif. - In the first game of the Fresno State Classic, the Fresno State softball team (12-9) suffered its first loss at home this year as Pacific (8-11) used a four-run seventh inning to win, 5-3, Thursday afternoon.
Fresno State led much of the contest after it scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fifth, while Pacific scored once in the fifth and four times in the seventh.
"Once we got the lead, we didn't play Bulldog softball," Bulldog head coach Trisha Ford said. "Their two hits in the seventh weren't hit hard but unfortunately we couldn't make plays on them, and we also made some other mistakes and they capitalized. Once we got the lead, we stopped playing aggressively, so we'll come back out Friday and play with extra motivation."
Senior third baseman Vonnie Martin knocked in the Bulldogs' first two runs on a single to center field after sophomore shortstop Whitney Smith and senior left fielder Kapri Angotti singled, and junior right fielder Michelle Solomon walked.
In the bottom of the fifth, Martin added her third homer of the season over the left field wall to give the `Dogs a 3-1 lead.
With her 2-for-4 day, Martin's 3 RBI was a season high and one off her career high last year vs. UTEP (4).
"After the first inning (a strikeout looking), I always was trying to redeem myself," Martin said. "I try to see the ball well, (and with the homer) I didn't think I got all of it so I was really glad it had enough to clear the fence."
Senior center fielder Brenna Moss also went 2-for-4 for her team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season, while five other Bulldogs hit safely once.
In the seventh, the Tigers took their first lead with four runs on two singles, two walks and two hit by pitches.
Two innings before, UOP scored a run in the top of the fifth after a single, hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt, and infield error on a grounder.
In her 12th start of the year, Fresno State sophomore Jill Compton pitched the first five innings, struck out two, walked one, and allowed four hits and one unearned run.
Sophomore Hannah Harris (3-3) pitched the sixth and seventh innings, notched no strikeouts, one walk and two hits allowed, and one of the four runs allowed that was credited to her was earned.
Coming in with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning, sophomore Taylor Langdon got the final two outs and also issued a walk and hit by pitch and another batter reached on an infield error on a grounder.
Pacific starter Dani Bonnet (4-4) notched the win, and in her fourth complete game of 2014, she struck out four, walked two, and allowed nine hits and three earned runs.
At the plate for the Tigers, right fielder Taylor Petty (2-for-3, BB, RBI) was the lone visitor with multiple hits and boosted her team-leading average of .431 before Friday's game. DP Taylor Brink also reached twice on a pair of hit by pitches.
Looking ahead to more action in a busy weekend, the `Dogs continue to host the Fresno State Classic the next three days.
The Bulldogs' remaining games are set for Friday vs. Ohio State at 6 p.m.; Saturday vs. Cal Poly and New Mexico State at 3:45 and 8:15 p.m.; and St. Mary's on Sunday at 3:45 p.m.
