    SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team opened the second day of the Capital Classic with a 6-1 win over Texas State and then fell to host Sacramento State 3-0. The Bulldogs (17-12, 0-0 MW) tallied 10 hits on the day, highlighted by freshman Whitney Smith's first career home run.

    Brenna Moss led off with a single and advanced to second on an error to jump start the `Dogs offense. Stesha Brazil reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Moss scored on a fielder's choice plating the first run. Michelle Solomon and Brazil executed a double steal, which allowed Brazil to score and the `Dogs led 2-0.

    The Bobcats cut the Bulldogs lead to 2-1 after scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Hannah Harris ended the inning with a strikeout, she struck out two in her 10th start of the year. Harris threw six innings allowing only one run. She improves to 4-2 in the circle and has a 2.71 ERA.

    Solomon added to Fresno State's lead in the bottom of the third inning. She hit an RBI triple to center field as the Bulldogs lead increased 3-1. Solomon has two triples on the season and a total of 12 extra base hits in 2013.

    In the fourth inning, Smith crushed a solo home run over the left field wall. Her first home run as a Bulldog extended the `Dogs lead to 4-1 over the Bobcats.

    The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth inning increasing their lead 6-1. Pinch hitter Kelly Megee reached base after a full count walk. Catcher Paige Gumz doubled off the left field wall putting runners on the corners. Megee scored on a wild pitch and Vonnie Martin brought in the final run of the inning with a single through the left side.

     

     

    The second game of the day began as a pitcher's duel and remained scoreless through three and half innings. Jill Compton struck out the side in the third inning as the pitching duel continued against Sacramento State. Compton has struck out the side three times in her career. She struck out six consecutive batters against then-No. 6 Cal last weekend.

    Sacramento State ended the scoreless streak by hitting a solo shot over the right field fence and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hornets added two more runs with another home run to left field increasing their lead 3-0 over the `Dogs.

    The Bulldogs threatened in the seventh inning, but the Hornets got out of the inning to beat Fresno State 3-0. The `Dogs conclude the Capital Classic on Sunday, March 17 against St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
