LAS VEGAS - Fresno State softball ended the three-game series with a 6-4 win over UNLV on Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. Junior Stesha Brazil's eighth home run of the season gave the Bulldogs (22-17, 3-3 MW) the lead in the top of the seventh inning.
"It was big for us to get the win," said Solomon. "We were struggling a little bit this weekend, but we didn't want to feel the way we did after the first two games. We put our heart out on the field and did our best. It feels good to end the weekend with a win."
The Bulldogs fell behind early after giving up four runs in the first inning. Fresno State answered tying the game with a grand slam from Michelle Solomon in the third inning. It is the second career grand slam for Solomon, who hit one earlier this season against Utah State. The Bulldogs have hit three grand slams this season.
With two outs in the top of the third, designated player Caitlin reached base after earning a walk. Kapri Angotti recorded the first hit for the `Dogs and put two runners on base. An error by the Rebels first baseman loaded the bases for Fresno State and Solomon.
"First off my teammates got on base before me with two outs, which was awesome. It couldn't have happened without my teammates," Solomon said of her grand slam. "I just swung and wanted to hit the ball hard."
Hannah Harris took over in the second inning and threw 5.1 scoreless innings en route to her seventh win in the circle. The freshman is no 7-4 on the season with a 2.12 ERA. Jill Compton got the start and struck out three batters.
In the top of the seventh inning, Brazil hit a two-run home run giving the `Dogs the lead 6-4.
"Stesha has been hitting the ball hard all weekend, so it was nice to see it pay off for her," said Solomon of Brazil's game-winning home run.
The Bulldogs outhit the Rebels 7-5 with Solomon and senior Diane Runge recording multi-hit games with two hits each. Freshman Paige Gumz had a base knock which extended her hitting streak to 10 games, which is the longest hitting streak of the 2013 season.
