FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23 Fresno State softball team picked up a 3-1 non-conference win over Saint Mary's due in large part to the performance of the Bulldogs' battery.
Freshman hurler Robin Mackin pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 for her 20th victory of the season. She also knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
With her 14th 10-strikeout game of the season, Mackin also became the sixth Bulldog rookie hurler to post a 20-win season.
Junior catcher Nichole Willis recorded the other two runs when she hit an opposite field two-run shot for her third long ball of the season.
In the first, Fresno State jumped out to a 1-0 lead. With one out and runners on second and third, Mackin lifted a deep ball to right field to score freshman third baseman Haley Perkins, who reached via walk.
In the fourth with one out, Mackin singled through the left side before Willis homered to right center to put the 'Dogs up 3-0.
Saint Mary's got on the board in the fifth when shortstop Lauren Clark hit a two-out solo home run.
Gaels' starting pitcher Chelsea Loftis took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits while walking one in four innings of work. Reliever Kate Albaugh threw the final two innings and allowed one hit and struck out one.
