April 11, 2006
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23 Fresno State softball team posted a 10-run inning and set a new single-game record in the process as the Bulldogs notched an 11-2, 5 inning win to complete a doubleheader non-conference sweep over Saint Mary's.
Recording 11 runs on eight hits, the Bulldogs saw every batter score a run in the fourth as they broke their own single-game record for most runs in an inning (10).
Fresno State had tied the former record (9) against Ball State on March 10 as the 1998 squad established the mark with nine versus San Jose State on April 21.
Bulldog starter Merryann Barr picked up her fourth win as she scattered six hits while allowing two runs (one earned) with a walk and a strike out. Robin Mackin pitched the final inning and struck out two of the three batters faced
Saint Mary's utilized three pitchers as starter Megan Galloway took the loss and dropped to 1-12 overall after allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits while walking four and striking out one in three innings. Lauren Gardner was unable to record an out as she allowed five runs on four hits against five batters faced. Justine Larsen got the final three outs and allowed one hit while walking one.
SMC would jump out to a 2-1 lead after scoring a run in the first and second inning.
In the first, the Gaels took advantage of a dropped ball with a play at home by sophomore catcher Kristin Sylvester. In the bottom half of that inning, Sylvester picked up the equalizer with a RBI single to center field.
In the second, a two-out RBI single to center field by third baseman Sandra Ruezga gave the Gaels a one-run advantage.
After a scoreless third, Fresno State would go on to score 10 runs on six hits in the fourth inning that last 35 minutes in length.
Batting around once, the Bulldogs started out with a walk and had another reach safely via a fielding error before the run barrage happened. Highlighting the inning was a three-run double to left center by Barr while four other 'Dogs each had a RBI.
In addition to Barr, Mackin (1-2, 2 runs) and junior centerfielder Shannon Garvin (1-1, run) also had multiple RBI games with two a piece.
