MORAGA, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team (23-15, 8-4) was edged 4-3 at St. Mary's (18-19, 4-2) in nine innings in its doubleheader opener Wednesday afternoon.

The Gaels scored the game's first three runs before a Bulldog rally tied it with two outs in the seventh inning. However, the Gaels' Christine Torrise ended the contest with her first homer of the season, a solo roundtripper in the ninth inning.

St. Mary's staked a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run homer by Andrea Hazel that also scored lead-off hitter Brittany Sabatini who had walked to open the inning.

SMC added a run in the third inning after singles by Katelyn Mamizuka, Erica Musgrave and Cassidy Szeredy.

Fresno State answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning after senior third baseman Vonnie Martin drilled her seventh homer of the season over the left field wall.

That shot moved the All-MW returnee into a tie for the team season lead with Stesha Brazil, and her 16th career-wise left her one shy of the 10th-best mark in school history held by Michelle Bolt (17, 1991-94).

In the seventh inning, the `Dogs tied the game with a run scored by freshman left fielder Kierra Willis. The Pleasant Hill, Calif., native drew a lead-off walk on a 3-2 pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior pinch-hitter Kelly Megee, and scored on a single by senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz through the left side.

At game's end, three Fresno State players ended with a pair of hits - Martin (2-for-4, 2 RBI), sophomore second baseman Whitney Smith (2-for-4) and sophomore catcher Paige Gumz (2-for-4), and three other `Dogs hit safely once.

In the circle, sophomore Jill Compton made her 22nd start of the season, struck out four, walked one, yielded four hits, and her three runs allowed were all earned.

In her sixth relief appearance of the year, sophomore Hannah Harris (7-6) pitched 5.1 innings, struck out none, walked one, allowed four hits, and her one run allowed was earned.

For SMC, starter Katie Moss pitched the first five innings, logged four strikeouts and no walks, and gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Gael reliever Lujane Mussadi (10-10) worked the final four innings, struck out three, walked two, and allowed four hits and one earned run.

At the plate for SMC, four players hit safely once.

Wednesday's opener tied the season series after Fresno State won their first meeting in the Fresno State Classic finale by a 3-0 score in mid-March.

The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader immediately after.
