MORAGA, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team (24-15, 8-4) wrapped up its doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at St. Mary's (18-20, 4-2) with a 4-1 victory in the finale, while the Gaels took the opener, 4-3, in nine innings.

In the second game, the `Dogs scored one run in the third inning and three in the fourth inning, while SMC's run also came in the fourth.

Junior center fielder Brenna Moss's history-making speed accounted for Fresno State's first run. The All-MW returnee reached on a two-out error by the shortstop, stole second base, and continued to race to third base and home on an errant throw by the center fielder.

An inning later, sophomore second baseman Whitney Smith led off with a bunt single, advanced on a two-out error on a grounder by junior DP Kelly Megee to the pitcher, then scored on a single by freshman left fielder Kierra Willis to left field. Moss followed with a two-run double to center field for her fifth two-bagger of the season (and career) and second multi-RBI game of the season.

SMC's run came later in the fourth as starting pitcher Sarah Lira homered to center field with no runners on base.

The current MW Pitcher of the Week, Bulldog sophomore Hannah Harris, started the game, struck out none, walked two, and allowed four hits and one earned run.

Sophomore Jill Compton (15-7) made her fourth appearance of the year in relief, struck out five, walked two, and yielded three hits and no runs.

In the opener, the Gaels scored the game's first three runs before a Bulldog rally tied it with two outs in the seventh inning. However, the Gaels' Christine Torrise ended the contest with her first homer of the season - a solo roundtripper in the ninth inning.

St. Mary's took the lead in the first inning after a two-run homer by Andrea Hazel that also scored lead-off hitter Brittany Sabatini who had walked to open the inning.

SMC added a run in the third inning after singles by Katelyn Mamizuka, Erica Musgrave and Cassidy Szeredy.

Fresno State answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning after senior third baseman Vonnie Martin drilled her seventh homer of the season. The two-run blast over the left field wall also scored senior first baseman Stesha Brazil who had singled the at-bat before.

That shot moved her into a tie for the team season lead with Brazil, and her 16th career-wise left her one shy of the 10th-best mark in school history held by Michelle Bolt (17, 1991-94).

In the seventh inning, the `Dogs tied the game with a run scored by Willis. The Pleasant Hill, Calif., native drew a lead-off walk on a 3-2 pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Megee, and scored on a single by senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz through the left side.

At game's end, three Fresno State players ended with a pair of hits - Martin (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Smith (2-for-4) and sophomore catcher Paige Gumz (2-for-4) - and three other `Dogs hit safely once.

In the circle, Compton made her 22nd start of the season, struck out four, walked one, yielded four hits, and her three runs allowed were all earned.

Harris (7-6) pitched 5.1 innings in relief, struck out none, walked one, allowed four hits, and one run allowed was earned.

For SMC, starter Moss pitched the first five innings, logged four strikeouts and no walks, gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Gael reliever Lujane Mussadi (10-10) worked the final four innings, struck out three, walked two, and allowed four hits and one earned run.

At the plate for SMC, four players hit safely once.

Earlier this season, Fresno State won the teams' first meeting in the Fresno State Classic finale by a 3-0 score in mid-March.

Looking ahead, the `Dogs wrap up their non-conference slate on Thursday with a 6 p.m. game at Santa Clara.
