COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman Jill Compton backed up her career-best performance by tossing her fourth complete game shutout in Fresno State's 5-0 win over Colorado State on Sunday at Mt. Lion Field. The Bulldogs (26-20, 7-5 MW) out hit the Rams 12-2 to win the final game of the series.
"We had nothing to lose and wanted to leave it all on the field," said Compton. "We came out ready to play. Once we started getting runs on the board I started to feel more comfortable. The defense played really well behind me and Paige caught a good game."
Compton struck out nine batters en route to her 12th win in the circle. She struck out the side in the third inning and nearly struck out the side again in the sixth. In her two appearances against the Rams, Compton struck out a total of 20 batters.
Diane Runge scored the first run for the Bulldogs after the Rams attempted to throw Michelle Solomon out as she stole second base. The `Dogs added another run with a RBI single from Stesha Brazil, which gave Fresno State the lead, 2-0, after the first inning. Brazil finished the game with a game-high four hits after going 4-for-4 at the plate.
Compton surrendered her first hit in the fourth inning and gave up only two hits in the outing. The complete game shutout dropped Compton's ERA to 3.18.
In the fifth inning, Solomon hit a RBI double plating Runge again as the `Dogs led 3-0. Fresno State turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the fifth inning.
Junior Vonnie Martin drove in two more Bulldog runs with a single up the middle in the seventh inning to seal the win 5-0. Martin, Solomon and Runge all recorded a multi-hit game with two hits in the final game against Colorado State.
The Bulldogs head to San Diego State on April 26-28 for a key Mountain West series against the Aztecs.
