SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team (25-17, 9-5) opened its busiest week of conference action with a doubleheader split at San Jose State (25-19, 8-6) Tuesday afternoon.

The `Dogs took the first game against its first-year MW rivals by an 8-1 count, then dropped the second contest, 5-3.

In the finale, Fresno State scored a run in the first, second and seventh innings, while the Spartans plated two runs in the fourth inning, and added a three-run, walk-off homer in the seventh inning from clean-up hitter Jessie Hufstetler.

Leading the 'Dog offense, junior DP Kelly Megee (2-for-2, walk) reached base safely in all three trips, including a second-inning solo homer - her second of the season - that shot shot over the left field wall on a near-horizontal trajectory.

Two other Bulldogs also had a pair of hits - junior center fielder Brenna Moss (2-for-4) and sophomore catcher Paige Gumz (2-for-3).

In the first inning, Moss led off the game with a single to second base and after stealing second base, she advanced on a single by senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz, and scored on a ground-out by senior third baseman Vonnie Martin.

The Spartans retied the game in the fourth inning after a single, infield error, walk and a pair of RBI singles. SJSU could have added another run, but Moss threw out the would-be second run at home as the runner tried to score from second base on a single up the middle.

The `Dogs retook the lead in the sixth inning after a two-out walks by freshman right fielder Kierra Willis and Megee, a single by sophomore catcher Paige Gumz, and error by the second baseman on an attempted pick-off at second base.

In the circle, Fresno State sophomore Hannah Harris made her 16th start of the year, struck out two, walked five, gave up seven hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.

Sophomore Jill Compton (16-8) pitched to the final San Jose State batter and allowed the game-deciding homer.

SJSU starter Allison Lang pitched the first 6.2 innings, struck out two, walked two, allowed 10 hits, and two of her three runs allowed were earned.

Reliever Madison Fish (8-3) retired her only Bulldog batter faced on a strikeout in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and a runner on first base.

At the plate for SJSU, Hufstetler (3-for-3) led the Spartans in hits, and left fielder Jessie Meyer (2-for-3, RBI) also had hit safely multiple times.

<< GAME 1 RECAP >>

In the opener, the `Dogs scored an 8-1 win thanks to the 14th complete game of the year by sophomore Jill Compton. The All-MW returnee's seven strikeouts was her second-highest tally of the year, and she also walked two and scattered six hits and one earned run.

At the plate, a pair of Bulldogs stroked three hits - junior center fielder Brenna Moss (3-for-5, SB) and sophomore second baseman Whitney Smith (3-for-4). The duo now have 19 and nine multi-hit games on the season (and first- and second-most on the squad in 2014).

Senior third baseman Vonnie Martin (2-for-3) added her seventh multi-hit game of the campaign, and her 34th walk of the season moved her into a tie for fifth-most in a season for the `Dogs.

Among the four Fresno State players that hit safely once, freshman Kierra Willis (1-for-1) also drew a pair of walks in her first start of the year in right field.

In the `Dogs' five-run second inning, senior first baseman Stesha Brazil and Smith led off with a double and single, and Fresno State's first run came on a sacrifice bunt by Willis and errant throw by the pitcher to first base. Two batters later, on a grounder by junior DP Kelly Megee, the first baseman tried to get the force out at home, but the ball skipped away to score two runs.

Senior left fielder Kapri Angotti followed with a two-run single to center field for her RBI season high.

In the third inning, Fresno State added a run on three straight singles by Smith, Willis and sophomore catcher Paige Gumz (1-for-3).

The `Dogs scored another run in the fourth inning when Moss singled and advanced on a bobble by the left fielder and sacrifice bunt, then scored on a single by Martin to left field.

Fresno State's final run came in the sixth inning after Moss singled to shortstop with one out, stole second base, then scored on another RBI single by Martin to shortstop.

Moss's pair of swipes Tuesday gave her 27 on the season and moved her into a tie for the second-best total in school history - only seven off her school record from last year.

Offensively for SJSU, the game started fortuitously with a pair of singles, a walk and RBI single by Jessie Hufstetler all occurring with no outs. However, Compton struck out the Spartans' fifth hitter, and Moss added another highlight-reel diving catch and doubled up the runner on second base who hadn't tagged to end the inning.

Fresno State added its 22nd double play of the season in the second inning when Brazil gloved a lined shot down the 1B line, and dived back to tag first base and narrowly beat the runner for the out. The `Dogs entered the week ranked eighth nationally and first conference-wise in the category and logged its fifth multi-double play contest of the year.

For the game, right fielder Michelle Cox (2-for-2) was the lone Spartan with multiple hits, and four others hit safely once.

SJSU starter Katelyn Linford (8-11) pitched the first 3.1 innings, struck out three, walked one, allowed nine hits, and four of her seven runs allowed were earned.

Allison Lang worked the next 2.1 innings, struck out two, walked one, and gave up one hit and one earned run.

Berlyn Rippentrop worked the final 1.1 innings, logged no strikeouts and one walk, and allowed two hits and no runs.

Looking ahead, the `Dogs return to the SJSU Softball Field for the series finale on Wednesday at noon.

Later this week, Fresno State returns home to host UNLV for 6 p.m. games on Friday and Saturday, and a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday.
