`Dogs Earn Second WAC Sweep

    Final Stats

    FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog softball team earned its second WAC sweep and fourth WAC series of the season by taking the doubleheader from New Mexico State on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond.

    The `Dogs won game one 7-6 and took down the Aggies 3-1 in game two. Fresno State improves to 33-14 overall and 12-3 in WAC play while NMSU falls to 21-24 and 2-13.

    "It was important for us to get the sweep," said junior Caitlin Stiglich. "NMSU never let down but we just kept swinging and made sure we had more runs than they did."

    Game One
    Haley Gilleland led off the bottom of the first for the `Dogs against Carissa Theis with a triple to right field and scored on an error. After singles by Andrea Ortega and Michelle Moses, Theis was replaced by Alex Villalobos.

    Stiglich then hit a three-run home run, her third of the season to propel to `Dogs to a 4-0 lead.

    The Aggies rallied in the second against Bulldog starter Mackenzie Oakes. Angie Ortega walked, Lauren Morizi was hit by a pitch and Ashley Maroda and Tehani Kaaihue hit back-to-back singles to drive in a run.

    Morgan Melloh entered with the bases loaded and no outs to replace Oakes. Melloh got three-straight outs with a pop up and two strikeouts.

    Nicole Angene singled to lead off the Bulldog fourth and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Becca Walker. Kaylan Pollard entered to pinch run for her and scored on a double by Diane Runge to left center.

    Hoku Nohara got a run back for the Aggies in the fifth with a solo home run to right center to cut the lead to 5-2.

     

     

    Moses and Stiglich walked in the fifth as Theis was back in the circle for the Aggies. A single up the middle by Lisamarie Coronado drove in Moses for a 6-2 lead.

    New Mexico State scored another in the sixth with two outs on a single by Ali Baumhover.

    Gilleland hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth to put the `Dogs up 7-3.

    The Aggies got within one in the top of the seventh after an error, single and three-run home run by Nohara. Melloh got the final out of the game with her 10th strikeout.

    Melloh got the win to improve to 14-8 overall in the circle and 5-0 in WAC play. Theis got the loss for the Aggies and drops to 5-9.

    Fresno State had 10 hits, led by Gilleland, Moses, Stiglich and Coronado with two each. NMSU had 12 hits.

    Game Two
    After a quiet two and a half innings, Moses put the `Dogs on the board with a two-run home run in the third. Ortega scored after getting on base with a walk. It's the 16th home run of Moses' career and she now is tied for second in a single-season with Christina Clark. Clark holds the single-season record with 23.

    Angie Ortega hit a solo home run for NMSU to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth with no outs.

    Gilleland led off the bottom of the fifth for the `Dogs with a bunt single. She stole second and reached third on a flyout by Andrea Ortega.

    Stiglich walked to lead off the sixth and Jody Badorine entered to pinch run. Badorine reached second on sacrifice bunt by Coronado and scored from second on a single up the middle by pinch hitter Courtney Moore for the third Bulldog run.

    Moses got the win in the circle, allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts. Sydney Williard got the loss for the Aggies while allowing two runs on four hits.

    The `Dogs had five hits, led by Moses with two.

    Fresno State will head to Hawai'i next week to take on the first place team in the WAC.
