RUSTON, La. - The No. 22 Fresno State softball team shook off its one-run loss to Louisiana Tech with a 5-3 victory over the Techsters in the night cap of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Freshman Robin Mackin, who went 3-3 with a run in the first game, went 2-4 with two RBI while collecting her 24th win of the season.
Mackin got help from freshman Merryann Barr, who came into the third inning and pitched 2.2 innings before Mackin went back into the circle in the sixth.
Improving to 24-9 overall, Mackin allowed one run on two hits, walked three and struck out eight in 4.1 innings of work.
Fresno State jumped out quickly went it took a 1-0 lead after an half inning of play. Senior All-America shortstop Christina Clark doubled to left center on the first pitch. Sacrificed to third by freshman third baseman Haley Perkins, Barr hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Clark.
In the bottom half of the frame, Louisiana Tech picked up two runs on a hit and a Bulldog error.
In the third, the Bulldogs scored twice. Junior center fielder Shannon Garvin led the inning off with a single to center field and Clark drew a walk to put runners of first and second. Perkins moved Garvin and Clark up a base with another sacrifice. With one out, Barr singled up the middle as Garvin scored. After a strikeout, Mackin hit a two-out single up the middle to score Clark and give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the third baseman Jessica Elson scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk to start the inning.
With the score tied at 3-3, Garvin led the seventh off with a single through the left side. Clark beat out an infield hit deep in the 5-6 hole before Perkins reachd on a single up the middle. With the bases loaded, Barr reached on a fielder's choice but Garvin was out at home after second baseman Rochelle Sandberg threw home. Sophomore catcher Kristin Sylvester picked up a RBI after reaching on a fielder's choice as Clark scored and Barr was out at second. Mackin then picked up her second RBI of the game with a RBI single to center field to score Perkins.
Louisiana Tech utilized two pitchers as starter Kristin Rupp allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and a strike out in four innings of work. Taking the loss was Krissi Oliver, who fell to 10-10 overall after yielding two runs on five hits with a strike out in 3.0 innings of work.
In the game, three Bulldogs had multiple hit games in Clark (2-2, 3 runs), Mackin (2-4) and Garvin (2-3, run). Barr and Mackin also posted multiple RBI games for the 'Dogs with two each.
Fresno State (32-14, 10-2 WAC) wraps up its three-game series against Louisiana Tech (17-27, 5-9 WAC) tomorrow afternoon with a single game at 2:00 p.m. (12:00 p.m., PDT).
