No. 25 `Dogs Win Opening WAC Tournament Game
May 7, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - The top-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs played their first game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after earning the first round bye, and defeated No. 7 Boise State 4-0. Fresno State continues its quest for their third WAC Tournament Title on Friday as the `Dogs take on Louisiana Tech that defeated Nevada, 4-0, on Thursday.
"The first one is always the tough one," said the Bulldogs head coach and WAC Coach of the Year, Margie Wright. "I think our kids were a little tight to begin with, but I thought they showed a lot of perseverance and kept fighting and got some really crucial hits. Morgan did a good job keeping them off base too."
Fresno State improves to 34-18 on the year while Boise State falls to 22-29 and plays Hawai'i at 4:45 p.m. tonight.
Morgan Melloh improved to 26-14 in the circle and with her 10th and final strikeout to end the game, tied former Bulldog All-American Amanda Scott at No. 2 all-time in school history with 851 strikeouts. She has 397 on the year and needs just three to post back-to-back 400 strikeout seasons.
"I knew they were a strong hitting team and they're always going to be tough, so we just had to play our game," Melloh said. "I just went out there and did my job."
With the complete game shutout, it was the 16th of the season for Melloh and the 36th of her career, tying her for 10th on the Bulldog career list with Maureen Brady.
The `Dogs had two hits in the game entering the sixth inning when Haley Perkins led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. Back-to-back walks to Ryane Petersen and Caitlin Stiglich by Bronco starter Allie Crump loaded the bases with two outs.
A single to right center by Alexis Lujan drove in two as the `Dogs took a 2-0 lead.
The next pitch, Lisamarie Coronado drove to right field as two more `Dogs scored for the final score.
The `Dogs finished with five hits in the game while Melloh threw a two-hitter.
In WAC Tournament action on Wednesday, Boise State defeated San Jose State 8-4 (9), Nevada defeated New Mexico State 5-4 and Louisiana Tech defeated Hawai'i 7-1.
