FRESNO, Calif. - Softball fans across the nation watched Margie Wright's Fresno State Bulldogs defeat Louisiana Tech Friday night on ESPNU at Bulldog Diamond by a score of 2-1.

The Bulldogs (35-16) clinched the No. 2 seed, with the win, in next week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

LA Tech falls to 25-18 and 10-9 in league play, good enough for fourth place in the conference standings.

The `Dogs had five hits, led by Andrea Ortega with two. Michelle Moses, Courtney Moore and Nicole Angene also had hits for the `Dogs.

Junior pitcher Morgan Melloh (15-8) got the win in the circle for Fresno State, allowing just one run on eight hits. The biggest stat of the night for Melloh was a new season-high in strikeouts with 16. Eight out of the first nine outs in the game for Melloh were strikeouts. With her third strikeout in the first inning, Melloh picked up her 200th on the season.

"Morgan did a really good job," said Wright. "She gave up a few hits but when she needed to get out of it she did. I thought our defense did a phenomenal job tonight as well."

LA Tech got its only run in the fourth inning after Jessica Kirby singled and scored after a single to right by Molly Goza.

Fresno State scored both of its runs in the fifth inning that started with a bloop single to shallow right field by Moore. Kaylan Pollard entered to pinch run.

Pollard got to second on an error and Caitlin Stiglich reached first on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Pollard scored from second on a single to right field by Angene tying the game at 1-1. The run was unearned.



Stiglich scored the go ahead run on an illegal pitch by LA Tech's Meghan Krieg. Krieg allowed two runs, both unearned on five hits with eight strikeouts.

The two teams will decide the series on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Join us in honoring Fresno State's two seniors, Brooke Phipps and Lisamarie Coronado, prior to game one.
