FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23 Fresno State softball team scored nine runs in the first three innings of play and went on to notch a 9-0, 5 inning victory over Louisiana Tech for its first win in the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
Freshman pitcher Robin Mackin, who had her no-hitter squelched on a bloop hit to left with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, posted her 12th shutout of the season while recording her 26th victory. Walking three and striking out seven, she pitched her fifth one-hitter of the year.
With five doubles in the game, Fresno State had five players record multiple hit games.
Louisiana Tech starter Krissi Oliver was chased out of the circle quickly. Throwing just innings, she allowed nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits while walking one to fall to 11-14 on the year. Reliever Kristin Rupp threw the final three innings and allowed two hits while walking one and striking out three.
Fresno State opened the game with five runs in the top of the first. Senior shortstop Christina Clark led the game off with a double to right center. Freshman third baseman Haley Perkins reached on an error that saw her and Clark each take an extra base. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Sylvester then reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. After Mackin grounded out, freshman designated player Merryann Barr connected for a two-run double to left center to plate both Clark and Perkins while Sylvester went to third. Junior catcher Nichole Willis followed with a RBI single up the middle to score Sylvester while Barr advanced to third. While Willis was called out on an attempted steal, sophomore second baseman Jenna Cervantez answered with a RBI single up the middle to plate Barr. Sophomore left fielder Ashley White came up the plate and immediately doubled to left center to score Cervantez and give the Bulldogs a quick 5-0 lead.
In the third, Willis led the inning off with a double to left center and Cervantez followed with a single to put runners on the corners. White then collected a RBI single to left that saw Willis score. With Cervantez on second, junior centerfielder Shannon Garvin drew a walk to load the bases. Clark reached on a fielder's choice and picked up a RBI as the Lady Techsters attempted to get Cervantez at home. With the bases still loaded, Rupp came in to the game to face Perkins and got her out on a ground out but Perkins picked up the RBI as White scored. With Clark on second and Garvin moving to third on the play, Mackin hit a deep shot to center field and picked up a sacrifice fly as Garvin scored.
With the victory this afternoon, Fresno State advances to the 5:00 p.m. game against Hawai'i.
