WAC Coaches Favor `Dogs to Win
Jan. 20, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - The 2009 WAC coaches pre-season softball was released on Tuesday, and Fresno State was selected to win its 21st conference championship by earning 48 points and six first place votes. This is the 12th time in the last 14 years the Bulldogs have been favored to win the title.
"It's quite an honor for the coaches in our conference to select us," head coach Margie Wright said. "But I think we all have to keep in mind it is pre-season and in order for us to fulfill not only their predictions but our goals we need to play hard to make this become reality."
Sophomore Morgan Melloh, last year's WAC Freshman and Pitcher of the Year, was selected as the pre-season Pitcher of the Year. Melloh was first in the WAC last year in six different categories and ranked second in the nation in wins all season long.
Also earning pre-season honors was senior Haley Perkins. This is the third pre-season All-WAC honor for Perkins as she was named an at-large selection. Perkins ranks in five of the Fresno State top 10 career batting categories.
"I can't say enough about what Morgan and Haley mean to our program and to the entire conference," Wright said. "They have represented Fresno State athletically and academically and I'm very proud of them and it's great to see that other members of this conference are able to recognize that as well."
Last year's regular season champion Nevada finished second with 40 points and one first place vote. Hawai'i was third, just one point behind the Wolf Pack and also received one first place vote. The 2008 WAC Tournament Champion Louisiana Tech was selected in a tie for fourth with New Mexico State with 28 points, followed by San Jose State (21), Utah State (12) and newcomer Boise State (8).
