FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State softball hosts CSU Northridge in a midweek doubleheader on Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. in Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs are 4-1 under new head coach Trisha Ford after the first weekend of play hosting the Fresno State Kick-Off Tournament.
Both games against the Matadors will be broadcasted on ESPN 790 The Deuce. Also available is live streaming and game tracker via gobulldogs.com.
Ford Era Starts Off Hot
Trisha Ford led the Bulldogs to a 4-1 record in the first weekend of the 2013 season, her first with the `Dogs. Fresno State opened the season by defeating UTEP in five innings. The Bulldogs only loss of the weekend happened in extra innings. She became the fourth head coach in the history of the 35-year program. She comes to Fresno State after serving the last nine years at Stanford.
`Dogs Deliver at the Plate
Head coach Trisha Ford promised an aggressive offense from the Bulldogs in 2013 and the `Dogs delivered in the first inning of the season. Junior Vonnie Martin hit her first career grand slam in her first at-bat of 2013. Later on in the same inning, Brenna Moss hit a base clearing triple as Fresno State jumped ahead 7-0 over UTEP. The Bulldogs are hitting .304 with four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 19 RBI. The 'Dogs have out hit opponents 41-32.
Scouting the Matadors
The Bulldogs lead the overall series against CSU Northridge 35-20. The last meeting was in 2012 and the 'Dogs lost 9-5. The Matadors are off to a 1-4 start in 2013. CSUN opened the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Matadors defeated Western Michigan and lost to ASU, San Jose State, Florida and Cal. Shelly Tait had two starts over the weekend striking out five in 9.2 innings pitched. She has a 1-1 record and an ERA of 2.9. As a team, CSUN is hitting .223 with six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI.
Compton Takes Control of the Circle
Freshman Jill Compton made her Bulldog debut opening weekend and took control of the circle. She struck out 13 batters in 28 innings of work. Compton has a 3-1 record and three complete games in four starts. The right-hander recorded a career best five strikeouts against UC Riverside in her second start of the year. After five appearances, Compton has a 1.75 ERA.
Moss Swiping Extra Bases
Sophomore Brenna Moss leads the team in stolen bases after opening weekend. The outfielder stole five bases in five games, including tying her career-high of two stolen bases in a single game, which she has done three times in her career. Her fifth stolen base of the season, allowed the game-winning run to score against Sacramento State.
Freshmen Make Impact in Debut
Three freshmen made their debut opening weekend combining for 14 starts. Whitney Smith and Paige Gumz started every game in the first weekend of 2013 at third base and behind the plate, respectively. Gumz has the third best hitting average at .357 and leads the team with two doubles. Jill Compton made four starts in the circle and has a 3-1 record. The right-hander recorded three complete games and has an ERA of 1.75.
Home Is Where the Heart Is
The Bulldogs are off to a 4-1 start at Bulldog Diamond in 2013. Fresno State has an overall home record of 807-185-1 in 36 years. The best single-season home record at Bulldog Diamond is 27-0 set by the 1998 National Champion squad.
