Oakes Honored By WAC, Games Postponed
March 21, 2011
DENVER - After beating No. 5/6 Michigan and Illinois on back-to-back days, the Western Athletic Conference honored Bulldog junior pitcher Mackenzie Oakes as the WAC Pitcher of the Week.
"I'm really, really proud of her," head coach Margie Wright said of Oakes. "Mackenzie did a great job against Michigan and did a good job all week. This was a well deserved honor."
In her three starts last week, Oakes recorded a 3-0 record in the circle with a 0.67 earned run average to lead Fresno State to wins over No. 5 Michigan (3-1), Illinois (3-2) and Bradley (3-2). Oakes' performance against No.5/6 Michigan (29-2) handed the Wolverines their second loss of the season. The feat also came against UM's All-American Jordan Taylor after Michigan had run-ruled No.7 Arizona and Kenzie Fowler the previous day at the Judi Garman Classic.
The Bulldogs are now 8-0 this season in Oakes' eight starts, which have all been complete games.
On the week, Oakes (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) tossed 22.2 innings and recorded a 2.16 earned run average with 10 strikeouts and allowed only five walks.
This is Oakes' first WAC honor of the season and second of her career.
In 2011, Oakes is 10-2 with a 1.86 earned run average over 15 appearances and 75.1 innings of work. She has also held opponents to a .231 batting average and picked up a save in the Bulldogs' 7-3 win against BYU.
