Brazil Tabbed MW Player of the Week After Aggie Sweep
April 1, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After helping the `Dogs to a 3-0 mark vs. Utah State at home last weekend, Fresno State senior first baseman Stesha Brazil was tabbed the MW Softball Player of the Week in an announcement by the conference Tuesday.
The Turlock, Calif., native led the team for the three games combined in hitting (.625), slugging (.875), on-base percentage (.727), hits (5), stolen bases (3) and total bases (7).
She now has eight multi-hit games on the season after a pair the opening two games of the series (2-for-4 / 2-for-3). She also hit safely once in the finale and walked three times to reach base safely in eight of 11 at-bats in the series (which also included three hits in six at-bats against recent MW Pitcher of the Week Noelle Johnson).
Her success in all three games extended her hitting and reached base streaks to eight and 11 games, respectively - both the second-longest on the team this year.
On the season, she leads the squad in homers (6), RBI (31) and slugging (.536), and stands second in total bases (52) and stolen bases (9), and third in hits (28) and walks (11). She also ended the weekend ranked fifth season-wise in MW in homers (6) and RBI (31).
Also honored Tuesday, Nevada junior Megan Rotch was selected as the MW Pitcher of the Week. The Reno, Nev., native guided Nevada to a 3-0 record last week with a sweep at home of New Mexico.
She tossed the conference's first no-hitter of the year last Friday, and she had five strikeouts in the 8-0, six-inning win. On Sunday, she added a 3-1 complete-game win, and allowed just four hits and one unearned run and struck out four.
Three weeks ago, Fresno State redshirt sophomore Kiley Shae Aldridge won her first MW Pitcher of the Week honor after she logged a 1-0 shutout versus No. 6 Washington.
In the finale of the Judi Garmin Classic, her nine strikeouts came in her first start in nearly two years and tripled her previous Bulldog best from this season (3) and also 2012. She also limited the returning Women's College World Series advancers to three hits after they entered the game with a .358 team batting average.
Among other recent Bulldog honorees in the circle, sophomores Jill Compton and Taylor Langdon combined for three weekly pitching honors in 2013, while senior third baseman Vonnie Martin was a two-time MW Player of the Week last season.
Other current 'Dogs honored with WAC Player of the Week honors include senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz (2012).
Last weekend at Bulldog Diamond, Fresno State swept Utah State with home wins on Friday (6-0), Saturday (8-0 (5)) and Sunday (4-3) to hand the Aggies (13-17, 3-3) their first MW losses of the campaign after they swept CSU at home the previous weekend. The 'Dogs also extended their series win streak to 21 straight games dating back to 2006.
This weekend, the 'Dogs (19-12, 4-2) looks ahead to a three-game weekend set at New Mexico (10-23, 1-5) on Friday-Sunday, April 4-6.
The `Dogs were originally scheduled to play at Pacific (11-19, 0-0) on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m., but the game was postponed due to impending rain forecasts.
