DENVER, Colo. - Fresno State sophomore infielder Brooke Ortiz was named the Verizon WAC Hitter of the Week for April 2-8 on Monday, the conference office announced.
This is the first time in Ortiz's career that she has been named the WAC Hitter of the Week and she becomes the first Bulldog this season to collect the honor. Mackenzie Oakes (Feb. 20) and Michelle Moses (Feb. 27) have both received the WAC Pitcher of the Week honor this year.
Ortiz led the Bulldogs last week by hitting .533 in five games, going 8-for-15 at the plate to help Fresno State sweep the series from Utah State. She scored six runs, which accounted for 25 percent of Fresno State's 24 runs on the week and she also had three RBIs. Ortiz drew three walks, had a .733 slugging percentage and .611 on-base percentage during the week.
In the doubleheader against UNLV during the middle of the week, Ortiz went 5-for-7 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored in the two games.
She had a two-run triple in the 8-0 win over Utah State in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader and scored two of Fresno State's three runs in the 4-0 win in the series-opening victory over the Aggies.
Ortiz has hit safely in each of the last six games and has moved into the team lead with her .350 batting average.
She and the Bulldogs look for their fourth-straight win Monday night as Fresno State hosts Cal Poly for a 5 p.m. game at Bulldog Diamond. It is the last game of Fresno State's nine-game home stand, as the Bulldogs travel to San Jose State this weekend for a three-game series, April 13-14.
