FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball hosts Boise State April 12-14 for a three-game conference series. The Bulldogs will be hold their Strikeout Cancer game during this series, which includes a blood drive, Locks of Love donation and first pitches from cancer survivors.
About Boise State
The Fresno State vs. Boise State series began in 2009 and the two programs met annually in Western Athletic Conference series until 2011. The series resumes this year now that the Bulldogs have joined the Mountain West. The `Dogs lead the overall series 9-4. The last meeting was in 2011 and the Broncos won the series 3-1.
Scouting the Broncos
Boise State is 17-19 on the season and 1-2 in Mountain West action. The Broncos sit in sixth place in the conference standings. Boise State is hitting .286 after 37 games with 47 doubles, four triples, 26 home runs and 156 RBI. The Broncos have also recorded 38 stolen bases this season. Tara Glover leads the team with a .392 batting average, including seven doubles, a triple, four home runs and 19 RBI. Devon Bridges leads the team with seven home runs and 41 RBI. In the circle, Boise State has a combined ERA of 4.36 and 157 strikeouts. Ace Rebecca Patton has a 9-7 record and a 3.81 ERA with a team-high 77 strikeouts. She has hurled two complete game shutouts and a total of nine complete games.
Home Is Where the Heart Is
The Bulldogs are off to a 12-3 start at Bulldog Diamond in 2013. Fresno State has an overall home record of 812-186-1 in 36 years. The best single-season home record at Bulldog Diamond is 27-0 set by the 1998 National Champion squad.
Bulldogs Grab Grand Slams
Fresno State has recorded three grand slams in 2013. Junior Vonnie Martin recorded her first career grand Slam in her first at-bat of the season against UTEP. Michelle Solomon became the second Bulldog to hit a grand slam after recording her first against Utah State. She recorded a second grand slam against UNLV. The most grand slams hit in a single season were four set in 2009. The most career grand slams by a Bulldog are five by Christina Clark.
`Dogs Collecting Bases
Fresno State is first in the Mountain West in stolen bases. The Bulldogs have stolen a total of 60 and surpassed the 2012 total of 18. Brenna Moss is leading the way with 22, while Stesha Brazil has 13 stolen bases. The `Dogs are on pace to break the single-season stolen base record of 75 set in 1980.
Angotti Moves into Lineup
Junior transfer Kapri Angotti has moved into the Fresno State lineup and making quite the impact. The first-year Bulldog is hitting .400 in 19 starts and 29 appearances. She has recorded six RBI, one of which was the game-winning run against Kansas. She made her first start in front of a home crowd and recorded two hits. The outfielder has 24 hits, including a double and six runs scored in 2013. Angotti has recorded five multi-hit games and hit .714 (5-for-7) against Cal Poly.
Gumz Settling In
Freshman Paige Gumz has started every game of the 2013 campaign behind the plate and is hitting .315, which is the third best average of the starters The catcher has 35 hits on the season, including eight doubles. Gumz has tallied 15 RBI, 10 runs scored and 13 walks. She has recorded four multi-hit games during her freshman campaign.
Moss Swiping Extra Bases
Sophomore Brenna Moss leads the team and the Mountain West in stolen bases. The outfielder has a total of 22 stolen bases, including tying her career-high of two stolen bases in a single game against Sacramento State. Her fifth stolen base of the season, allowed the game-winning run to score against Sacramento State.
