Harris Honored as MW Pitcher of the Week
April 15, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After helping the Fresno State softball team move into a tie for first place in the conference, sophomore pitcher Hannah Harris was tabbed the Mountain West Softball Pitcher of the Week in an announcement by the MW office Tuesday.
Against NCAA Tourney returnee San Diego State last Saturday, the Santa Barbara, Calif., native logged her third shutout among her five MW starts in the 2-0 second-game win.
In the seven-inning effort, she logged two strikeouts and one walk, and her three hits allowed was one shy of her season low.
In Sunday's finale, she also made her fifth relief appearance of 2014 and finished her third game of the season. She came in with one out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, and helped the team notch its 18th double play of the year against the only batter that she faced.
On the weekend, she led the team in ERA (0.00), wins (1), lowest opponent batting (.125), appearances (2), fewest walks (1) and fewest hits allowed (3).
Season-wise in 2014, she ranks second on the team in wins (7), appearances (18), starts (13), shutouts (3), complete games (5), innings (65.1), strikeouts (28) and opponent batting (.252).
On this week's MW season charts, she ranked top 10 in fewest homers allowed (first, 3), fewest hits allowed (third, 63), opponent batting (fifth, .252), fewest walks allowed (fifth, 23) and ERA (seventh, 2.89).
Also honored Tuesday, Boise State's Tara Glover was chosen as the MW Player of the Week. The senior center fielder went 4-for-11 last weekend and stole four bases in the team's road sweep at Nevada.
Among other recent honors, Bulldog senior and first baseman Stesha Brazil picked up her first career Player of the Week honor after she helped the team to a sweep of Utah State three weekends ago. The Turlock, Calif., led the team for the three games combined in hitting (.625), slugging (.875), on-base percentage (.727), hits (5), stolen bases (3) and total bases (7).
She claimed her seventh and eight multi-hit games on the season the opening two games of the series (2-for-4 / 2-for-3). She also hit safely once in the finale and walked three times to reach base safely in eight of 11 at-bats vs. the Aggies.
Three weeks before, redshirt sophomore Kiley Shae Aldridge won her first MW Pitcher of the Week honor after she logged a 1-0 shutout versus No. 6 Washington.
In the finale of the Judi Garmin Classic, her nine strikeouts came in her first start in nearly two years and tripled her previous Bulldog best from this season (3) and also 2012. She also limited the returning Women's College World Series advancers to three hits after they entered the game with a .358 team batting average.
Among other recent Bulldog honorees in the circle, sophomores Jill Compton and Taylor Langdon combined for three honors in 2013, while senior third baseman Vonnie Martin was a two-time MW Player of the Week last season.
Other current Fresno State players honored with WAC Player of the Week honors include senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz (2012).
Last weekend at home, the `Dogs went 2-1 vs. the returning MW champion Aztecs with 5-4 and 2-0 wins in the first two games. In the finale, the two teams were scoreless through the first eight innings before SDSU won 2-0 in the ninth inning to force a three-way tie for the MW lead with San Jose State (and all three sport .667 winning percentages).
This week, Fresno State (23-14, 8-4) plays its final three non-conference games of the year at St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 16 (1 p.m. doubleheader) and at Santa Clara on Thursday, April 17 (6 p.m. single game).
Next week, the `Dogs remain on the road for a three-game, mid-week series at San Jose State (Tue., April 22 doubleheader, noon; Wed., April 23, noon), then return to host UNLV (Fri.-Sun., April 25-27) at Bulldog Diamond.
