FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State softball travels to Colorado State for a three-game Mountain West Series April 19-21. It is the first of two consecutive road trips for the Bulldogs, who head south to San Diego April 26-28 for a series against the Aztecs.
About Colorado State
The Fresno State vs. Colorado State series began in 1988 with the Bulldogs winning 3-1. The `Dogs won a 26-5 record against the Rams. The last meeting was in 2010 and CSU won 3-2. The Bulldogs have won seven of the last eight games.
Scouting the Rams
Colorado State is 18-19 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. The Rams are in third place in the Mountain West standings. CSU is hitting .282 as a team with three starters hitting .300 or better. Ashlie Ortega it hitting a team best .382 with five home runs and 22 RBI. Kacie McCarthy is 14-9 in the circle with a 2.26 ERA and 112 strikeouts. She has thrown six shutouts in 25 appearances. The Rams have a team ERA 3.50 and 177 combined strikeouts.
Martin Earns MW Weekly Honor
Vonnie Martin earned her first Mountain West Player of the Week Honor last week. She batted .462 (6-of-13) with five RBI, three runs scored and one walk while helping Fresno State post a 3-1 record last week. The junior hit three doubles while recording at least one hit in each of the four games, finishing with on-base and slugging percentages of .500 and .692, respectively.
Fresno State Leading the Nation
Sophomore Brenna Moss is tied for first in the nation in triples with seven. She is third in the country in triples per game with 0.18. The outfielder is also 31st in stolen bases per game with 0.58. Sophomore Maria Sio has 0.37 sacrifice hits per game and is fourth in the nation. As a team, the Bulldogs are 12th in the country in triples per game with 0.33.
On the Road Again
Fresno State will play the next six games on the road starting at Colorado State April 18-21 and ending at San Diego State April 26-28. The Bulldogs play 10 games on the road in the month of February, 11 in March and a total of 33 away from Bulldog Diamond in 2013. The `Dogs are 4-7 on the road and 6-8 in neutral territory this season. Angotti Moves into Lineup
Junior transfer Kapri Angotti has moved into the Fresno State lineup and making quite the impact. The first-year Bulldog is hitting .373 in 22 starts and 32 appearances. She has recorded eight RBI, one of which was the game-winning run against Kansas. She made her first start in front of a home crowd and recorded two hits. The outfielder has 25 hits, including a double and six runs scored in 2013. Angotti has recorded five multi-hit games and hit .714 (5-for-7) against Cal Poly.
Gumz Settling In
Freshman Paige Gumz has started every game of the 2013 campaign behind the plate and is hitting .350, which is the second best average of the starters The catcher has 42 hits on the season, including 10 doubles. Gumz has tallied 17 RBI, 10 runs scored and 13 walks. She has recorded four multi-hit games during her freshman campaign.
Harris Shuts Down MW Foes
Hannah Harris has dominated in the circle against Mountain West opponents. She has the second best ERA (0.74) in conference action after allowing only three earned runs in 28.1 innings of work. In her appearances against Nevada and Boise State she posted a 0.00 ERA. Mountain West opponents are hitting .210 against her, which is the best in the conference. Harris has an overall record of 8-5 in the circle and an ERA of 2.00 in 91 innings pitched. She also leads the conference with two saves.
