Compton Lands Third Career MW Pitcher of the Week Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After helping the Fresno State softball team (28-18, 12-6) move into sole position of first place in the conference, sophomore pitcher Jill Compton was tabbed the Mountain West Softball Pitcher of the Week in an announcement by the MW office Tuesday.
Appearing in all six games last week, the All-MW returnee went 3-1 with two shutouts and a pair of one-run outings among her four complete games.
In her 2-0 win in the finale at NCAA Tourney returnee San Jose State, the Oceano, Calif., native logged her first no-hitter of the season, second career-wise, and 71st in school history. .
Also winning the series opener vs. the Spartans, 8-1, she struck out seven in both contests, and tied her second-highest total of the year for the fourth and fifth times.
Later in the weekend series vs. UNLV, she logged a 1-0 shutout in which she struck out six, and allowed only four hits and one walk - also only the third shutout of the Rebels this year by any team, and first in MW play.
The day before on Saturday, she picked up her first career save after retiring the final two outs in the 6-3, second-game win vs. UNLV with the tying run at the plate.
In the opener vs. the Rebels, she pitched seven scoreless innings, before allowing a run in the eighth inning in the 1-0 decision.
Combined for the week, she led the team in ERA (0.71), wins (3), shutouts (2), innings (29.2), strikeouts (26) and opponent batting average (.162).
Even more impressive, she capped the weekend by allowing only one run in the last 22.2 innings of her last four appearances.
On the year, she paces the team in nearly every pitching category, and leads the MW in opposing batting (.220) and ranks second in ERA (2.07) and strikeouts looking (44), and third in strikeouts (134), wins (18) and starts (26).
Nationally this week, she stood 13th in shutouts (8), 92nd in ERA (2.06) and 108th in strikeouts (135).
Also honored Tuesday was UNLV shortstop Garie Blando as the MW Player of the Week. The sophomore went 12-for-21 (.571) at the plate with a home run, four RBIs and six runs scored, and helped UNLV to a split of its six MW games versus SDSU and Fresno State.
Compton was also honored twice last year; sophomore Taylor Langdon added a third pitching honor for the team in 2013; and senior third baseman Vonnie Martin was a two-time MW weekly player pick last season.
Other current Fresno State players honored with WAC Player of the Week honors include senior shortstop Brooke Ortiz (2012).
Last week, the `Dogs went 2-1 both at NCAA Tournament returnee SJSU and at home vs. UNLV, and have won five straight conference series.
This week, Fresno State remains at home to host Colorado State (30-13, 11-7) this Friday-Sunday, May 2-4.
With two, three-game series left on the season, the `Dogs (28-18, 12-6) sit one game ahead of the Rams who are in a three-way tie for second place with SDSU and Boise State with 11-7 marks.
Friday's series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Saturday's 2 p.m. contest is Margie Wright Stadium Dedication Day. The former Hall of Fame head coach's first pitch is set for 1:57 p.m., and special commemorative towels will be available for fans that arrive early.
Sunday is Senior Day, and the `Dogs five-member senior class will honored just prior to the noon start.
