FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State sophomore infielder Brooke Ortiz was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 softball first-team on Thursday, as was announced and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
The Capital One Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
With Ortiz's first-team selection, she now becomes eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Ortiz becomes the 19th different Bulldog to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team and the first since Haley Perkins was a second team selection in 2009.
An interior design major, Ortiz is leading the Bulldogs in batting this season with her .313 average. She has played and started in all 51 games and has scored 21 runs with 15 RBIs. She has 11 multi-hit games this year and had a 10-game hitting streak from March 30-April 20, which ties for the longest on the team this year.
She was named the Verizon WAC Hitter of the Week on April 9 after going 8-for-15 (.533) in five games during the week of April 2-8. During that span, Ortiz scored six runs, had three RBIs, three walks and she connected for one double and one triple.
As a freshman in 2011, Ortiz was named second-team All-WAC and selected to the Academic All-WAC and NFCA Scholar Athlete teams.
