Stanford Rolls To 8-0, Five-Inning Win Over Tulsa

    May 19, 2006

FRESNO, Calif.- Stanford erupted with a seven-run fifth-inning and banged out 12 hits en route to a 8-0 shutout of Tulsa in five innings during NCAA Regional competition on Friday night at Bulldog Diamond.

Missy Penna, who picked up the win in the circle with five shutout innings that also included five walks and five strikeouts, led the Cardinal offense with three hits. Teammate Erin Howe drove in two runs and all but one of Stanford's starters tallied at least one hit.

After two scoreless innings, Stanford broke through for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Cardinal received back-to-back singles from Catalina Morris and Jackie Rinehart to begin the inning and Morris came around to score on Lauren Lappin's double to center.

The Cardinal iced the win with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, much to the delight of a contingent of Stanford fans making the trip over from the Bay Area on a breezy Fresno night.

Jessica Barr and Katie Torres recorded hits for Tulsa, playing in its first NCAA Tournament game. Maren Genow suffered the loss, dropping to 15-10.

Stanford faces host Fresno State tomorrow at noon; Tulsa tangles with Cal State Fullerton at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination contest.
