FRESNO, Calif. - In the gold medal game, Team USA softball was stunned by Japan 3-1 Thursday in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It is the final year in which softball will be an Olympic sport. Team USA had won the previous three gold medals and had not lost a game since 2000 and only four games in four Olympics.
With the loss, USA finished with the silver medal and Australia, which fell to Japan in the semifinal's earned the bronze. This is Japan's first gold medal in the sport of softball and Australia's third bronze.
Team USA defeated Japan twice in the preliminaries, 9-0 and 7-0. The gold medal game was their only loss of the Olympics. They also defeated China (9-0), the Netherlands (8-0), Chinese Taipei (7-0), Canada (8-1), Australia (3-0) and Venezuela (11-0).
Former Bulldogs Laura Berg and Lovie Jung were members of Team USA. This was the fourth Olympics for Berg, the only member of the team with now four Olympic medals. Berg played in five of the games with her best performance coming in a start in the preliminaries vs. the Netherlands. She had one run, two hits and an RBI in two at bats.
Jung started every game at second base getting seven hits in the tournament. Another former Bulldog, Robin Mackin pitched in three games for Team Canada who finished fourth and just out of medal contention.
