Bulldogs Explosive Off The Blocks

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs were explosive off the blocks at the Fresno State Aquatics Center downing Cal State East Bay 233-47 as well as Cal State Bakersfield 206-87. The 'Dogs battled hard the whole meet against the Aztecs, but came in short falling 174.5-114.5.
"It was a really great day in the pool for us today," said head swimming coach Jeanne Fleck. "We had some breakthrough swims and we are really pleased with that. We came out tough and did not back down against any opponent."
Junior Dani Yoho swam the 50 Yard Free in a 23.62 good for a first place finish in the event. Sophomore Brittany Buna also had a first place finish in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:12.35 and Michelle Dockendorf swam in right behind for a second place time of 2:13.28.
In the 100 Yard Free Sheehan, a freshman from Waukesha, Wis., set a new personal best and season best with a time of 10:24.54. Freshman Alex Madsen debuted in her first collegiate swim meet placing third in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 59.87.
"The girls are getting tougher," said Fleck. "The freshmen are really starting to trust us [coaches] and they are really learning how to race quicker. We had a lot of season best swims today and we like to see that."
This was the first home triple-dual meet for Fresno State this season and the Bulldogs won two of the three meets. With even more conditioning, workouts and swimming the extra work is paying off and the Bulldogs are seeing time improvements in the pool.
"We are doing three-a-days, with running and lifting Monday, Wednesday and Friday and two swimming practices," said Fleck. "Then Tuesday and Thursday we have dry land workouts and two swimming practices. The workouts are really paying off and it showed today in competition."
The divers had a successful day as well with Hannah Prigge setting a new personal best and season best in the 1-meter dive scoring a 276.40. Prigge placed second in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Immediately following the meet, Prigge left for Palo Alto to compete in the Stanford Diving Invitational women's platform dive Sunday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs now prepare for The Beach Invitational next weekend in San Diego as they take on the University of San Diego and Loyola Marymount on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21, 2012.
"We Are Your Team!" - The Fresno State swimming and diving team will return home on Saturday, Feb. 4 to swim against WAC rival San Jose State. The Bulldogs will also recognize three seniors for Senior Day.
