LOS ANGELES -- After five events, the Fresno State swimming and diving team sits in third place at the Beach Cup in Los Angeles.
Loyola Marymount, the host of the Beach Cup, leads the pack with 194 points. The Bulldogs trail by 50 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Kali Conlon, Hailee Baldwin, Tarryn Rennie and Leah Hatayama started the day off nicely for Fresno State with a second place finish (1:47.95) to finish just over a second behind Loyola Marymount. Fresno State also had a fifth place finish in that event with the team of Esme Gullick, Michelle Dockendorf, Dana Jones and Lucy Titchin recording a time of 1:50.85.
Hatayama swam a strong 50 Free in the fourth event of the afternoon. The sophomore clocked a 24.51 to finish second, just behind Loyola Marymount's Kjirsten Magnuson (24.27).
Sophomore Kelly Simmons swam a 5:03.70 in the 500 Free to finish within a second of a new personal-best time. She finished in third and scored 12 points for the `Dogs.
Diving was in action on Friday evening, but results will not be available until tomorrow morning. Fresno State divers are coming off of a strong performance at the UCLA Diving Invitational, so the Bulldogs are hoping to score well in the two diving events this weekend.
The Beach Cup continues on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., PT at Loyola Marymount.
