FRESNO, Calif. -
As the Bulldogs host the final home competition of the 2011-12 season, seniors Heidi
Gjoen, Jordan Morillo and Dede Torres will be recognized for Senior Day before the meet
against San Jose State. These three seniors mark the first four year class to go through
the Fresno State swimming and diving program since it was reinstated in 2008. The
Bulldogs will host WAC rival Spartans at the Fresno State Aquatics Center at noon on
Saturday, Feb. 4. The 'Dogs (4-5) are coming off a great second place finish at The USD
Beach Cup and a weekend of rest. This will be the final season competition for Fresno
State before the WAC Championships.
A Look At The Competition:
San Jose State: The Spartans (6-1) have recorded their most recent wins over Cal State
East Bay and Cal State Bakersfield.
Luke Earns Second WAC Honor
Fresno State's Stacey Luke was named the Verizon WAC Diver of the Week for the week
of Jan. 16-22. This was Luke's second WAC honor this season. Luke, a junior from Kenmore,
Wash. (Inglemoor HS), set a career high and broke a school record while taking
first in the 1-meter diving competition at the University of San Diego Beach Cup. Her score
of 294.70 was 30 points higher than the second-place finisher and broke the 10-year-old
Fresno State record, previously held by Ashleigh Raley.
'Dogs Finish 2nd At USD Beach Cup
Bulldogs Explosive Off The Blocks
The Fresno State swimming and diving team competed in The USD Beach Cup in San
Diego, Calif. against the University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
Fresno State came in a solid second place finish with 285 behind USD with 352 points.
The Bulldogs delivered strong performances all weekend highlighted with Stacey Luke'
school-record breaking 1-meter dive.
The Bulldogs were explosive off the blocks at the Fresno State Aquatics Center downing
Cal State East Bay 233-47 as well as Cal State Bakersfield 206-87. The `Dogs battled
hard the whole meet against the Aztecs, but came in short falling 174.5-114.5. Junior
swam the 50 Yard Free in a 23.62 good for a first place finish in the event.
Sophomore Brittany Buna
also had a first place finish in the 200 Yard IM with a time of
2:12.35 and Michelle Dockendorf
swam in right behind for a second place time of 2:13.28.
Luke Sets Career Best, Nguyen Wins Two
In the final home match of 2011, the 'Dogs fell to the Idaho Vandals 165-135 at the Fresno
State Aquatics Center, despite great performances by juniors Stacey Luke and Rayanne
Nguyen. For the second time this season, Luke (Kenmore, Wash.) set a new career best
dive in the 1 meter event scoring a 278.78. She set a new pool record and broke her previous
record by more than three points. Nguyen, a junior from Santa Barbara, Calif., won
the 100 Butterfly with a speedy time of 59.60 and won the 200 Butterfly with a 2:08.66.
Yoho Gains Great Experience
Fresno State's Dani Yoho competed at the AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. and
raced against some of the fastest swimmers in the world. Yoho swam a 27.04 in the 50
Meter Freestyle and finished 83rd out of 110 swimmers. Overall there were more than
1,000 athletes at the AT&T Winter Nationals with almost 650 of them being females.
