FRESNO, Calif. -- After a successful regular season, which included winning the team's first-ever Beach Cup in Southern California, the Fresno State swimming and diving team heads to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the Mountain West Championships starting tomorrow, February 19, and running through Saturday, February 22.
The Bulldogs finished eighth in their first appearance at the MW Championships last season. This year, they hope to improve on that.
"We really want to finish better than we did last year and move up to the middle of the pack," head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "We also want to break some personal-bests and set some new school records."
Fresno State will be led by diver Hannah Prigge. The senior from Rocklin enters as the top-ranked diver in the Platform and is in the top five in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Last year, Prigge finished second on the Platform, fourth in the 1-meter and seventh in the 3-meter.
The Bulldogs will rely on their youth to come up big, with freshman Esme Gullick and Hailee Baldwin both being counted on to contribute. Sophomore Leah Hatayama, junior Lucy Titchin and seniors Brittany Buna and Michelle Dockendorf are others to watch in their events.
Last week Fresno State was picked to finish ninth in the ten team championship by the coaches of the Mountain West.
"Yes it provides us with a little extra motivation because we are better then that," Fleck said. "We just have to go prove it in the pool."
The MW Championships will be broadcast online all week and can be viewed at themw.com.
