Watts Wins Big on Day One of Cal Winter Invite

BERKELEY, Calif. --- The Fresno State women's tennis team had three wins on day one of the California Winter Invite which was highlighted by Sophie Wattswin over No. 16 Zsofi Susanyi of California on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
"It was a good starting day for us, we have a lot to build on," said Fresno State head coach Ryan Stotland. "Sophie did awesome in singles and got one of the biggest wins in program. It is awesome because she really believes in what she doing, I am very proud of her for pulling that win off."
In a round-robin style tournament, Fresno State started the day with singles play against California who is nationally ranked tied for fifth. Sophie Wattshad the sole win for the Bulldogs against California, defeating No. 16 Zsofi Susanyi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Fresno State then went 2-for-4 in doubles play against No. 37 Saint Mary's.
"In doubles we competed hard and had great energy, we just need to make sure we keep moving," Stotland said. "Claire and Ash came back from behind and battled hard and pushed themselves to the limit. It was awesome, they came back to beat a very good St. Mary's team."
Bulldog ranked duo Claire Yang and Aishwarya Agrawal came back from 4-1 deficit to defeat Danielle Flores and Jamie Pawid. Anne Susdorf and Anneka Wattsalso paired to grab another doubles win for Fresno State over Sayaka Tsugai of Cal Poly and Catherine Leduc of St. Mary's.
"We had a couple individual accolades on day one of the tournament," added Stotland. "We still need to develop more on the team, and as we keep working on that we are going to be very good. Just have to keep striving."
Fresno State is set to face Cal Poly in doubles tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., before taking on St. Mary's in singles at 2 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex in day two of the California Winter Invite.
