Bulldogs Nearly Flawless at Winter Invitational
Jan. 18, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team was nearly perfect on the first day of the California Winter Invitational in Berkeley on Friday. The Bulldogs were flawless in doubles against Nevada and won seven of eight singles matches versus Saint Mary's during the hidden dual, a warm-up for the 2008 dual match season.
Juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe faced Nevada's Bailly and Mizyuk in their first match as the nation's No. 1 doubles tandem. Rowe and Gloria downed the No. 32-ranked Wolfpack duo 8-6, improving to 10-2 on the season. Sophomore sensations Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova were 8-1 winners over Dinh and Hall, while junior Danon Beatty and sophomore Vanessa Heroux beat Bardot and DeVrye 8-3.
"It was a good way to start the spring," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We played well in doubles, and I thought we were tough in singles against a Saint Mary's team that is very deep."
Five of Fresno State's seven singles victories were in straight sets. Gloria, Petukhova, Kucerkova, Rowe, Beatty, Heroux and senior Jacqueline Haskett were all winners.
Petukhova, ranked No. 11 in the nation, improved to a team-best 14-2 on the season after defeating Alexandra Poorta. Rowe, who achieved a career-best No. 43 ranking earlier this month, played solid in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Marah Calvo.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will battle Cal in singles play and Saint Mary's in doubles. Sunday's final day will feature the Bulldogs and Nevada in singles and Cal and Fresno State in doubles.
