Bulldogs Best Gaels in Doubles

By Stephanie Juncker FRESNO, Calif. --- The No. 60 Fresno State women's tennis team competed in day one of the Cal Winter Invite Friday in Berkeley, Calif. The 'Dogs fell to the No.7 California Bears in singles before besting No. 42 Saint Mary's in doubles. In singles action, the 'Dogs faced stiff competition from the top-ten ranked Bears who ended up sweeping all six matches. Despite the tough outing in singles, Fresno State bounced back in doubles, topping Saint Mary's 2-1. Senior Bianca Modoc teamed with newcomer Sophie Watts, who capped off her Bulldog debut with a strong 8-6 victory over Saint Mary's Leitz and Jullien. Fresno State's second victory came from senior Melissa McQueen and Anne Susdorf, who outlasted the Gaels Flores and Liljekvist in a tiebreaker to win 9-8 (7-3). Freshman Rana Sherif also made her Bulldog debut as she teamed up with Aishwarya Agrawal, but eventually fell 8-4. The 'Dogs will continue action at the Cal Winter Invite tomorrow and will face Cal in doubles and Santa Clara in singles. Friday Singles CAL Anett Schutting d. FS Aishwarya Agrawal 6-4;6-1
