No. 12 Bulldogs Top No. 16 Clemson, 5-1 at Indoors

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 12 Fresno State women's tennis team beat the 16th-ranked Clemson Tigers convincingly on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships. The Bulldogs were solid as they bounced back from a tough defeat to No. 3 Northwestern on Thursday in the first round. Fresno State won its first match of the season with the victory over Clemson and now faces Arkansas on Saturday.
"It was definitely a solid win today and we played very well in doubles," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "Clemson is an outstanding team and we were able to get some good wins in singles as well."
The Bulldogs came out strong in doubles, winning the doubles point for the second-straight match. No. 1-ranked Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe were 8-5 winners over Mijacika and Salge, while No. 29 Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova won 8-5 as well to clinch the point.
Gloria and Rowe both had tough singles matches. Gloria beat No. 4 Ani Mijacika 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and Rowe beat Ina Hadzisleimovic 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Petukhova bounced back as well with a solid win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Estafania Balda 6-1, 6-2. Kucerkova clinched the match for Fresno State with a straight-set victory over No. 84 Carol Salge.
Junior Danon Beatty led 6-4 and was in the second set when the match was halted.
The Bulldogs will play Arkansas at 7 a.m. PT (9 a.m. CT) in the second round of consolation play.
