TUSCON, Ariz. ---The No. 52 Fresno State women's tennis team fell short of a road upset Friday afternoon as No. 33 Arizona won 5-2.
"Today was a bit of a setback just because the belief wasn't there and we are a much better team than what we showed today," said head coach Ryan Stotland, who was making his first return back to Arizona where he was an assistant for the last four seasons. "We just need to get our confidence back, which we only have a day to get back. When we get that belief back we are going to be a much better team."
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. After Arizona won on court three, the 'Dogs countered with a win from Rana Sherif Ahmed and Melissa McQueen 8-5. The doubles point was clinched when the Wildcats were able to outlast the Bulldogs in a tiebreaker at the top spot, 9-8(2).
In singles, Arizona rattled off four straight singles wins to clinch the match. Despite the overall team match being decided, two Bulldogs continued to battle and each picked up victories in a third set tiebreaker.
Senior McQueen hung tough on court three after dropping the opening set to come back and win 6-4, 6-7(2), 1-0 (10-4) for her third straight singles victory, the longest streak for the Bulldogs currently. Freshman Sophie Watts also dropped her first set, but found a way to win in two extremely close sets at No. 6, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (14-12).
